It's All About the Chicken: Alva Reports From Her Motion Design Internship at DIE NEUDENKER®

What do chickens have to do with motion design? And what makes a NEUDENKER® internship? Alva is studying communication design with a focus on moving images at the Hochschule Darmstadt (h_da) and has successfully completed her practical semester in our agency.

Alex, NEUDENKER and motion designer, has been coaching Alva during her internship, which included

  • Introduction/Basics Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
  • First Scribbles, Character Design of the Chicken
  • Develop Storyboard and Plan Animation
  • After Effects Crash Course/First Exercises
  • Create Animated GIF

Alex has now met her for the interview. In it she tells us how she experienced her internship with us:

Alva at work: In the NEUDENKER® internship she creates her first small 2D animation - an animated GIF about her favourite animal

Alex: For 6 weeks you were a part of our agency team. Have we inspired you to rethink?

Alva: I've learned how to make complex things simpler and how to arrange a lot of the ideas that come into your head into a good storyboard and a nice composition.

Alex: Cool! What is the most important experience you take away from your internship?

Alva: That it wasn't the way you were told before by others. That when you go to an agency, all you have is stress and the people there are always just stressed. I couldn't see that here at all. So actually it was a super harmonious get-together and I'm less afraid of actually going to an agency later.

Alex: You study communication design and are a filmmaker in your spare time. If money wasn't an issue, what job would you have?

Alva: I would like to own an ostrich farm and make films about cycling.

Alex *laughs*: Preferably at the same time!

Alva *enthusiastic*: Preferably at the same time, yes!

Alex: This doesn't have anything to do with your affinity to chickens, does it?

Alva *ironically*: That has nothing to do with it, no. *laughs*

Alex: So the ostrich is the mountain bike chicken so to speak?

Alva: Yeah, that'd be cool: Videos with the mountain bike chicken.

Work in progress: After the storyboard is finished, Alva develops the first graphics and the colour scheme for her short film

Alex: Privately and in your animation - how did you actually come up with the chicken?

Alva: That was a long time ago... I've had chickens for 7 years now and I've always found them really exciting because I've always wanted to fly and I've always found birds interesting. And then one day I bought a mother hen and a chick at a market and then I couldn't stop. Chickens are always here and now. They are always intensively occupied with what they are doing at the moment and then they are also totally alert and can also become very trusting and cuddle you. Or they all have their own character and it is just totally exciting to watch them. So the theme of my animation was clear immediately.

Alex: So to speak the cats of the bird world *laughs*. That definitely makes the chicken an exciting character in an video animation. Since you are studying here in Hesse, the most important question is: How do you drink your Ebbelwoi (german Cider)?

Alva * laughs*: Well splattered! And cold.

Alex: Thank you for the interview, Alva 🙂

Et voilà - the chicken lives.
