'Making of' - Science to Watch. 17 Pitch Videos for the Technical University of Darmstadt

M&M video team of the NEUDENKER: Marcel Patsch (sound) and Malte Schweitzer (camera).

You can't know everything. But putting your knowledge into a 3-minute video was the challenge of the video shoot at TU Darmstadt. 17 professors with their research groups present their fields of expertise in a (video) pitch. Not much time to get to the heart of months or years of work. The focus is on promoting application-oriented research and transfer at universities. Selected topics included energy, mobility, production and resources.

There was no time to practice for the presenters. Because the tour of the scientific infrastructure/presentations of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, was to be implemented digitally at short notice (due to Corona). DIE NEUDENKER® were commissioned with the video production.

Here we go

DIE NEUDENKER® move out for the filming (real shooting). Our organizational talent Julia manages the tight schedule with film locations and the coordination with the professors in advance. The M&M video team from the NEUDENKER®, Marcel at the sound and Malte, our video editor, at the camera give their best.

The scientists present their work in short, comprehensible lectures, explain the innovation and solution approaches and show examples. The film is shot on location in laboratories and research halls, at the TU Lichtwiese and at the Stadtmitte campus in the heart of Darmstadt, Germany.

Reliable contact person and project supervisor is Meike Neufeld, Communication and Public Relations Officer, Darmstadt University of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering. She supports our guys with words and deeds. Despite high time pressure and not always easy shooting conditions, everything goes as planned. Then it's off to the follow-up.

Joachim Metternich, Prof. for Production Management, inspecting the location with Meike Neufeld, Head of Communication and Public Relations, Department of Mechanical Engineering (both TU Darmstadt) and NEUDENKER Malte Schweitzer.

Everything in the can - off to post production

Back at NEUDENKER headquarters, it's time for post production. Sifting, selecting and editing the shot video material is in Malte's and Stephan's hands:

  • coarse and fine video editing,
  • designing opening and closing credits,
  • implement graphics and animations,
  • inclusion of content contributed by the professors (mostly PPT slides or shorter sequences of explanatory videos),
  • Sound and color corrections, color grading

... and ta-da: many individual parts become one big whole. CUT! Or rather: 17 impressive video clips/pitches.

Our client, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the TU Darmstadt, is more than satisfied. It was a lot of fun for us. DIE NEUDENKER® wish the 'innovators of tomorrow' every success.
